Can I dispute a parking penalty from a supermarket car park because the attendant has lied on the notice?

I received a parking penalty at my local Morrisons supermarket the other week. I went to the machine and a customer was having problems so, as I only needed a few bits, I decided to shop without a ticket. I returned to my car and a penalty stating I had been parked from 14.21 till 14.53 but, as I work 17 miles from this store, I arrived at 14.45 and my checkout ticket shows the time of 14.53, so the attendant is obviously lying. I have appealed against the fine, but where do I stand if I refuse to pay as this attendant is telling lies.

If the dispute is about whether you parked from 14.21 to 14.45, then tell them to take you to court over the matter. If the dispute is about whether you could physically buy a ticket or not, tell them to take you to court over this. But if the dispute is about whether you parked at all, could have paid and didn't pay, then all you can argue is how "reasonable" the penalty is.
