Why are councils abandoning the use of speed cameras?

If speed cameras are such a milch cow for local councils, how come many councils in East Anglia are now abandoning them completely and will this not result in less safe roads?

The situation changed. Originally 'speed camera partnerships' lived off them and since their lived depended on the income from them they argued and lobbied very strongly for them. Most of the opinion leaders in favour of the proliferation of speed cameras got a cut out of them in some way. See Motorcycle News. Then Brown's Treasury realised it was missing out on the income so insisted all income came to it, and it, in turn, funded the speed camera partnerships. Now our new government is ceasing to fund these dubious partnerships. But someone will have to maintain the cameras or Treasury income from them will dry up.
