Buying a car for 400 miles per week

I am about to change from a 30 mile per week commute to a 400 mile per week commute and am looking to change my Honda Jazz (2004) for a newer and more comfortable car for the journey. My budget is £15,000.00.

Would you recommend diesel over petrol and are there any particular marques and models that you would recommend? Due to the brevity of my current commute I am only getting about 30-35 mpg from the Jazz, when I know on a longer run it can return 50-60mpg.

I have looked at the Mazda CX-7 and quite like it, but they seem to be above my current budget from what I have seen on forecourts and websites.

You aren't going to get 50-60mpg from a CX-7. You might from a KIA cee'd or Hyundai i30 1.6CRDI, both now cheap because both about to be replaced with new models.
