Buying a banger for a charity run?

I am writing to ask for advice and suggestions regarding a challenge that my team and I are taking part in this year. The event is the 2012 Banger Run, which is in support of Help for Heroes.

It is essentially a 4 day drive across Europe in a car that costs no more than £250. The event is organised by the RAF, with the majority of teams being military, given the nature of Help for Heroes. However anyone can take part. Further information, should you require it, regarding this challenge is available at www.bangerrun.com.

My own driving history is very limited and I have little experience in where to look, and what to look for when buying a used car, especially for this sort of event. A steer towards what to look for and what to avoid would be greatly appreciated!
