Modern wheel nuts

Why do cars these days have loose wheel bolts instead of fixed studs and loose nuts? It is much more difficult to change a wheel nowadays because it is not easy to align the holes in the hubs with those in the wheels.

Previously, one could hang the wheel from the top stud and the rest was easy. Now - especially with today's heavy wheels, it is a very fiddly job, especially in the dark when it is raining.

My car has two pins plus the hub to hand the wheel on, so no real problem. I think you get a better, more reliable fix with a bolt than with a nut. Also less chance of damage to the threads.
