Eco 4x4s?

We currently have a Saab 95 estate which we use to travel to France each year on a family camping holiday.

Can you please recommend a more economical runner in terms of MPG and also road tax and insurance.
Needs plenty of luggage space, for tent and child, that is comfortable for the long touring round France but equally suitable for the bumpy country lanes that my wife has to negotiate during her daily drive to work, particularly during the snowy winters. Budget is uncertain.
