What is the best long wheelbase van for conversion?

We want to buy a lwb van with a budget of £6000. Any advice? We have come across a lot of adverts that are scams. What should we look for - we have no mechanical knowledge

You can read our guide to the best large vans here - vans.honestjohn.co.uk/guides/best-large-vans/ - and while this covers new models, these makes and models have been in production for many years so you will also find used examples of their predecessors quite easy to find. We would suggest looking at the Ford Transit, as there are thousands of examples for sale, they are easy to fix and parts are cheap, as well as the Volkswagen Crafter, which is robust and can live a long life if well maintained.

As for avoiding scams, it is essentially a matter of 'guilty until proven innocent'. While online adverts on social media websites can bring up lots of examples for sale, the fact they are free to list makes them more attractive to scammers. You may find better results in looking for vehicle selling websites where sellers have to pay to advertise, or another option would be to look for used van specialists - while you may pay a little more when buying from a dealer, you have more recourse if something goes wrong. You can read more advice in our guide to buying a van here - vans.honestjohn.co.uk/advice/buying-a-van-your-com.../ - but if you do not have any mechanical knowledge, consider paying for a vehicle inspection for extra reassurance.
