My car won't go into reverse - what's the problem?

I have a Hyundai Tucson PHEV bought new in Sept, mileage 30,000 and serviced annually at Hyundai dealer. Very occasionally when engaging reverse gear in electric mode, the electric motor(s?) can be heard speeding up but the car doesn't move. I switch off the ignition and try again and all is well. On reporting this fault to a Hyundai dealer no fault could be found. Today the problem happened again but this time the motors speeded up more quickly and reverse gear suddenly engaged. I already had my foot lightly on the brake pedal so very quickly pressed harder, but not before the car shot backwards, albeit a very short distance-perhaps inches , perhaps more. The car is booked in again to investigate the problem but I cannot be sure I shall be able to demonstrate it as it happens infrequently. Are you aware of this problem and if the dealer cannot find any fault, what do you recommend I do?

We have not seen reports of this issue previously, so it therefore may be a less common fault, but the fact that it can cause a loss of control or inconsistent behaviour means it should be treated seriously by the dealer. It is likely that the issue relates to the engagement of reverse, so it could be that an actuator or solenoid is faulty or failing, which would account for the fault occurring intermittently and also not necessarily in the same manner. We would hope that on this occasion the dealer will be able to uncover the fault, but if not you may need to leave the vehicle with the dealer for an extended period of time so that they can drive it various conditions with a diagnostic tool connected so they can view live data from the vehicle. If you can narrow down the circumstances when the fault occurs, such as when the vehicle is hot or cold, at the start or at the end of journeys, this may help the dealer replicate the conditions that cause it to happen.

If this is still unsuccessful then we would suggest contacting Hyundai UK to escalate the issue. It may be that a senior technician is required to uncover the fault, but we would continue to press for a solution as this is a fault that could potentially cause an accident.
