What's the best 4x4 for £10k?
My son needs to replace his 10 plate Volvo V70 D5 with a roomy, reliable, 4x4 SUV (but would consider an Estate) and has a budget of around £10k including any trade-in. It needs to be able to regularly tow a 1500KG trailer, so engine probably needs to be around 2.0L.
He appreciates he’s not going to get anything recent for his budget, but he’s bit bewildered by the options that meet his target criteria for something around 10 years old with 50,000 miles or so – mostly from the likes of Kia, Hyundai, Nissan, Mitsubishi etc and wonders if he may get better reliability from say, a Volvo, with more miles on the clock...
Hoping you can help point him in the right direction...

The brands you've mentioned all generally have good reliability records. In fact, Volvo ranked lower than all of them in the reliability section of our Satisfaction Index ownership survey.
Something like a Hyundai Santa Fe or Kia Sorrento (which are related to one another, incidentally) could be worth a look. There are also 4WD versions of the Skoda Kodiaq that make for great tow cars, although his choice will be limited for under £10,000, and he'd have to settle for higher mileage.
