What hybrid will prove as economical as a diesel?

We have a Honda CR-V 1.6 diesel. It gives us easy access, a comfortable ride and 52mpg+ with mostly local runs but occasional trips (about 600 miles round trip). We are looking to replace it shortly with a hybrid as we have no means or access for charging. Is there a hybrid that will give better mpg? We have £8K - 10K available.

Some recent self-charging hybrids, such as the Toyota Corolla, could improve upon that figure, but on a budget of £8000 to £10000, a diesel car is most likely to yield the biggest economy increase from your CR-V. A second-generation BMW X1 18d, for example, offers over 60mpg according to the official figures, and it scores well in the Honest John Real MPG reports. It would also give a similar ease of access to your current vehicle.

If you're set on a hybrid, the Corolla's predecessor, the Toyota Auris, is worth a look.

I am looking for a car, preferably diesel and automatic but essential it is comfortable. My budget is under £20K what would you advise. My annual mileage is low around 5000 so not concerned on fuel costs.

Very efficient hybrid hatchback with a surprisingly upmarket interior. Good to drive, too. Standard equipment levels are generous.
