How do I check the DPF is in place on a used car?
You kindly helped me chose between a petrol 4x4 and a diesel pick-up to replace my 20 year old Ranger. I've been looking at Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi L200, and Isuzu D-Max from 2017 to 2021. A couple of private sellers have proudly told me that they have removed the DPF and mapped it out. I don't want this and want to be totally legal. Is there any way to check that the DPF is still in place before I buy?

Checking for the presence of a DPF where it should be fitted is part of the MoT test, so unfortunately it can make it difficult for buyers to check it is in place given that some owners are trying to get around the law. Commonly the DPF is cut open, the internal filters removed and the casing welded back up, so fresher-looking welds on the outside can be a tell-tale sign. You could also have the vehicle inspected by a trusted garage or companies such as the AA that offer complete vehicle inspections for prospective buyers and ask them to check for the presence of a DPF.
