Are petrol particulate filters problematic?

My daughter's three month old Kia Sportage mild hybrid petrol automatic recently flashed up an instruction to re-generate exhaust filter having covered 1700 miles. We were not aware that petrol cars are now being fitted with PPFs and the salesman didn't mention anything. So, she now has to run the car for anything up to 60 miles on the motorway at high revs once a week to re-generate which seems to be counter productive to running a supposedly fuel efficient and more environmentally friendly car.

Are most manufacturers now fitting PPFs and in all models, even those designed for town driving? Are manufacturers guilty of not publicising the use of PPF's more? The car's mpg is also very disappointing - around 20mpg. Granted, my daughter's usage has been mostly short town journeys, but this seems extremely low.

Most modern petrol engines built since 2018 are fitted with petrol particular filters in order to meet emissions standards. Although your daughter has experienced an issue, petrol particulate filters are less susceptible to the issues that diesel particulate filters have experienced due to their design. It could be argued that manufacturers have not publicised the use of PPFs, but they are frequently introducing new technologies designed to improve the performance and emissions of their vehicles, which for the most part customers have little or no interest in.

In the US Hyundai (parent company of Kia) gave the following advice to vehicle owners experiencing a PPF regeneration warning - drive over 50mph in third gear, accelerate to 4,000rpm, release the accelerator for five seconds and accelerate again to 4,000rpm, and continue this process until the warning light goes out.

In respect of the fuel consumption, we would expect it to be achieving more than 20mpg even if just used for town driving, so we would advise peforming a manual consumption check by brimming the tank, resetting the trip computer, taking an extended drive including cruising on a dual carriageway or motorway, then rebrimming the tank and calculating the fuel used against the distance travelled.
