EGR Valve

I bought a Mazda 6 TS2 Diesel. Drives beautifully and quiet for a diesel engine. Engine light showed and I rushed for diagnostics and I was told by Kwik Fit that it is EGR valve that needs to be replaced. The light has gone off and the car drives still ok. What should I do?

EGRs will eventually get gummed up. But if it happens again get a second opinion and also enquire if it can be cleaned up.

I have been told that the Volkswagen 1.6 TDI EA189 has a common fault with the EGR valves, but the 2.0 TDI EA189 doesn't seem to be as bad. Why does the 1.6 have this problem more frequently than the 2.0?
