Intermitted speedo failure

Recently the speedo has been dropping to zero for a while. Occasionally it jerks and then restarts again later.

The vehicle as been owned from new but is now a second car mostly in good working order, is this likely to be a straightforward repair?

It is due an MOT at the end of the month along with an annual service, your advice would be welcome.

Possibly an oil leak past the seal into the speed sensor in the final drive.
