Should I fit new tyres to the front or the back?

Should two new tyres go on the front or back of the car?

The majority of tyre manufacturers recommend that new tyres are fitted to the rear of the vehicle. This is because in the event of an emergency situation, having better grip at the rear will make the car more likely to understeer rather than oversteer, the latter being a more difficult attitude for most drivers to deal with.
