Time to cut my losses?

Sorry - got a 2 part question for you:

Part 1
I've spent £1,000 on my 52 Reg 60,000 mile 307SW 1.6 SE in the last 12 months fixing electrical and suspension problems (BSR unit, washer pump, front wishbones after bushing wore, top mounts).

I'm still left with a knocking / rattle which my local mechanic wants to change the front shocks for (he's looked at everything else), so I'm faced with another bill for £250. I need a new set of tyres and I guess the clutch will be due soon.

Facing reliability problems which are pushing up running costs, is it time to cut my losses and trade in for a different second hand car? Or have I just had an unlucky run and I should keep hold of it for another couple of years to get my money back on the investment in repairs?

Part 2 of the question:
The car itself has been great for the family, versatile seating and good load carrying for a mid-size estate and a pretty good drive, if a little under-powered. Can you recommend a replacement mid-size estate , perhaps something with better reliability?

Get rid. Get a newer 307SW or a 308SW. They are the only 7 forward facing seat station wagons. Otherwise you need to go to an MPV, like a Honda FR-V which has 6 forward facing seats. Just avoid the 1.7 engine.

Makes sense of the 307. Up to seven forward-facing seats. Good to drive. Decent diesels.
