Split gearbox casing

I bought my 55 plate Audi A3 2.0FSI second hand from my local Audi Dealer at 50K miles.

It's been serviced by them for the last 3 years and it's at 69K miles now. Good car.

Recently the clutch started dragging and felt odd while I was away. On putting it on a ramp my local mechanic tells me the gearbox casing is split. Apparently this is common problem for the FSI - any experience?

What are my chances of good will in replacing the gearbox from Audi? This is supposed to be a quality car with just under 70K miles on the clock and a full service history.

Yes, common. But Audi will only help if the fault is discovered by an Audi dealer. It will not fund the coast of a new box to be fitted buy an independent.
