One car in place of two?

We do about 10,000 miles a year between our two current cars, an 06 E-Class Mercedes 220CDI auto estate for quiet comfort on long runs and a 51 Daihatsu Terios for "country pursuits" and the wife going to Tesco's.

We are now at the age where we think we should go down to one vehicle but the specification is awkward - we want a 4x4 diesel automatic with a 2.0 litre chain cam engine and a reasonably high spec which will be a small enough to suit the lady and big enough to suit me and the dog!

We have looked at the Freelander 2, and considered the VW tiguan, Kia Sportage/iX35 and many others. We would love to buy the Audi Q5 but not availavle on our budget of £18,000. What would we expect to get on the two existing cars and what should we be the best replacement?

£11,800 for the Mercedes; £1,650 for the Terios. The Freelander and the Tiguan aren't chain cam. The Sportage and ix35 are, but the 2.0 litre 4WD versions are hard to get. Nissan has suspended sales of the Qashqai petrol automatic because it can't get the CVT transmissions. Maybe a 'nearly new' RAV-4 2.0i Valvematic CVT auto if you can find one.
