Second hand 4x4 vehicle

Firstly thanks for your Saturday column in the Telegraph. Saturday not the same without it!

After a hard Winter and being a senior senior citizen, I am fed up of the doubts about getting about. So I am looking to buy a cheap 4x4. It must be cheap to buy and fairly economical to run (mpg) now fuel is expensive. We have a family car, so I don't want to spend more than £3500. As I only do about 5000 miles per year on my own, I'm not too bothered about it having high mileage, that might effect the price, but it should be reasonably maintained. Am I asking too much?

Cheaper and much more sensible to fit your existing car with winter tyres from November to March. Winter tyres on a FWD or RWD car are more effective in snow than standard tyres on a 4WD. See:
