I wondered if what your views are on the merits of the Avensis, Insignia, Mondeo and Mazda 6, probably diesel and to keep for several years. I had a Mazda Xedos9 and loved it but is it worth the higher price? Are there any other models you would consider?

The Toyota Avensis has the best 1.8 and 2.0 petrol engines and is better with them than with the diesels. So far the Mondeo is better with diesel. It's waiting for a decent petrol engine (coming next year). The Mazda 6 is good with the basic 1.8 petrol, or the mid-power 2.2 diesel. The Insignia 1.6 petrol turbo is a modern engine but I don't trust the diesel on the basis of the disastrous previous 1.9 diesel in the Vectra.
