Conditional suspender

I read with interest your page on the 407 and it being prone to the lower hub joints failing. This has happened to my car, a 407 HDi X line Auto that I purchased pre registered from the Peugeot dealer in King's Lynn, in December 2005. It has done nearly 51k miles. I have been advised that the repair could come to £800+. The car has been regularly serviced by an independent, mainly due to costs. I found that the parts had been extensively modified on later models so believe there must be a fault in the manufacture. There was never a recall. Peugeot UK tells me that it is normal wear and tear, but if I wished to have the vehicle examined by a Peugeot dealer at my own expense and they confirm a manufacturing fault Peugeot UK might assist in some way but there are no guarantees. It seems to me that VOSA should have recalled the model. I have purchased 8 various Peugeots over the last 20 years, there are three on my drive at this moment. I don't think I will be purchasing another.

VOSA will not recall a car for a straightforward wear and tear issue. Certain Peugeot models: 205, 309, 306, 307, 308 and 407 were designed to put a lot of load onto the front tyres and that's what gives them such excellent handling. The downside is that this level of load eventually causes suspension wear. If you want a car that does not load its suspension, go for a Toyota Avensis.
