Electronic Stability of Profits

I see from your correspondent AF that he had a similar problem to me with his ABS. In my case my VW Golf 1.4 had a service immediately (just days) before the 3-year warranty was up as a precaution prior to its MOT. No problems were reported, indeed the service only amounted to a precautionary replacement of brake fluid on the advise of the dealer. 16 days out of warranty the ABS failed and I was given an estimate of £1,500 to £1,900 to rectify. Given that I have owned the car from new, the car had barely covered 17,000 miles and cost only £11,000 I was not predisposed to pay such an exorbitant sum. After exerting considerable pressure on VW I finished up paying £181.62 - the local dealer was helpful but Milton Keynes defensive in the extreme and I too have seen (via the internet) many cases of disgruntled VW owners with the same problem. I was told that as a loyal customer (I have had every Mk of Golf, not that this should make any difference) and because I had fully complied with the service schedule they would, as a gesture of good faith, help. I might add that their initial offer was nowhere near what I ended up paying and I advise persistence. This clearly looks like a design fault that VW should address without the need of a campaign via VOSA.

This widespread fault is with the system’s brake pressure sensor, and is shared with the SEAT Altea, SEAT Leon, SEAT Toledo, Volvo V40/S50 and BMW 1-Series. Possibly for the sake of its (positive) profit figures (out first week of August), VAG my have been trying to limit the number of claims it would allow for this. But VW UK has now relented. If the car has a full VW dealer service history, with the required brake fluid change every 2 years, VW will meet the cost of the repair. Even if the car has been serviced independently, VW will consider meeting part of the cost as long as the brake fluid was changed when it should have been.
