Golden steering wheel

Please could you give me some advice on buying a new car? I am joining a new company and they have given me a budget of £40k for a new company car without any guidelines at all. I would like a car that would carry four adults in comfort and some luggage although 95% of the time it would just carry me and a small amount of luggage. I do not want to pay an excessive amount of tax therefore I think a low emissions diesel would be the right choice of engine. I will cover about 30k miles a year so would like the car to be nice to drive.

That money gets you a Jaguar XF 3.0 diesel with the 275PS output. Quite a car. But to save on BIK tax you could go for a BMW 3-Series saloon or coupe with the 2.0 Efficient Dynamics diesel engine. The latest 320d ED performed spectacularly in its emissions tests.
