Tugging a liberty

I am 71 years old and drive a 2003 Golf 100TDI PD that has done 34,000 miles and pulls a 1,000kg caravan very well at 30 mpg, but struggles a bit on the A30 over Exmoor and Bodmin on the way to and from Cornwall. So I wondered if you could help me to come to some sort of decision about changing my car. I am looking for something a bit more comfortable, reliable and economical at the same time. A very good friend of mine has a 2003 Rover 75. 2.0CDI Connoisseur automatic saloon for sale. He has owned this car from new. It has only 18,000 miles on the clock, he has just taxed it and it has just passed its MOT this week, no problems. He will leave the 1-year road tax on it and will fill the tank, all for the sum of £4,500. At 72 years he has hip and back problems and is considering something like a “Berlingo”, which would provide easier access for him, this being the only reason for selling. I would appreciate a really early reply with your comments on what faults or problems to look out for on this motor, and what mpg to expect, because he wants a fairly quick decision, before he advertises it. I do understand you are a very busy man writing your page in the Telegraph, with perhaps more demanding problems than mine, but a few well chosen comments from you could maybe save me a lot of trouble. Looking forward to hearing from you soon

In car-by-car breakdown at www.honestjohn.co.uk. Very good-looking car (from all angles). Not built since April 2005 so some spare parts may become hard to get. Jatco 5 speed autobox well known and fitted to Mondeos, Galaxys and Freelanders, so no spares problems there. BMW diesel can go through turbos. Absolutely vital to idle the turbo for a couple of minutes after a long ascent or while towing before switching off.
