Are used sport variants of cars likely to have been thrashed by previous owners?

Should I beware of a used Toyota Yaris Sport model in case it's been thrashed or is unsuitable for my needs as an elderly driver? Thanks for your help.

No. On the Yaris, Sport is just a trim level and doesn't add any extra power or features that'll be undesirable to an older driver. It's unlikely to have been thrashed (the Yaris isn't a popular car with young drivers) but, as always, look for a full service history and signs of regular maintenance.
