Living on scraps

Having seen a Croydon Volkswagen advert in the local press for “a £2,950 allowance to buy a new Golf on top of the government scrappage.” I called in at their showroom yesterday. I asked the sales executive for availability of the car featured in the advert, a Golf S 1.6 TDI for £11,355, and was told that none were available from stock. I then asked if there were any on order and he consulted his computer and said that although there were many cars on order none had a firm delivery date and he could not guarantee that any car would be available before the 16 week “cut off”. He therefore advised me against ordering a car as I could be faced with paying the full price for it when it was delivered. I then went to the local Citroen dealership where I was told that as long as the details of the proposed scrappage and purchase were registered when a car was ordered the deal would be honoured regardless of the delivery date. I’m interested to know who is right?

Officially the cut-off date for the government's £1,000 is 16 weeks from order. But Citroen operates its own scheme, so as long as you get what the salesman told you in writing and your contract specifically states a price that cannot alter, even if Citroen imposes a price increase in the meantime, then your deal is solid. Interestingly, in the first 6 weeks of scrappage Citroen sold 834, VW sold 356, but Hyundai sold 4,666 and Toyota 4,468. Maybe VW isn’t too keen on scrappage.
Dear Honest John,
