Springquecento

I have a FIAT 500, which I bought new last September. About one and a half months ago I took it into the garage as it was making a high pitched noise and had a lot of general running noise when I drove. The FIAT garage couldn't find anything wrong, so I carried on. Last week I was driving from North Yorkshire down through Leeds and the high-pitched noise started again. I just dismissed it as FIAT said it would be nothing. As I carried on towards Birmingham there was a clonk like something was falling off (I didn't hit anything in the road, I am certain). Around 10 miles or so after that I had a blowout while I was in the outside lane of the M6. Luckily it wasn't that busy. However, I pulled over and the AA came out and put the space saver on. Around 25 miles or so after that, the high-pitched noise started again, so I slowed right down to about 25mph (knowing I couldn't go faster than about 40mph on the space saver anyway) and the noise seemed to calm down. The next day I took the car into a FIAT garage but as it was a Saturday there wasn't anyone to look at it, so I arranged for the wheel to be changed. This was done. All seemed fine until yesterday when I drove about 6 miles and the car started making the noise again. This time I pulled over and looked. The driver's wheel was red hot. Far hotter than the passenger wheel. I told the FIAT garage all this and they don't seem to be taking it very seriously. They suggested I bring it back in two weeks (as that is when they will have a spare car for me). They now want to charge me to strip down the brakes. Is this right? The car has only done 10,000 miles and they are not worn.

I wonder if a front coil spring has broken and twisted slightly or come
adrift at the base. The screech could be the end of the spring scratching on the rim and the blowout could have been because it actually punctured the tyre. I get 2 - 3 reports of coil spring failures every day, usually on 4 - 5 year old cars, never before on a FIAT 500 (I've got one too). Suggest that to the FIAT dealer. Or a failing wheel bearing. And if you get any more poor treatment from, let me know the dealer’s name and I'll report this to FIAT's UK MD, Andrew Humberstone who is actively picking his team of FIAT dealers.
