Golfer’s Golf

I am looking to buy either a new or second-hand car with a budget between £12k and £18k. The two main "musts" are that the boot must be big enough to accommodate my golf equipment (set of golf clubs and an electric golf trolley), and the car's width must be able to fit down my driveway, which is at its widest point 2.2m wide. I currently have a Peugeot 207 1.6 VTI 120bhp that I enjoy driving, but would like a slightly beefier engine - I mainly do weekend driving all year round, with a regular mid-week outing throughout the lighter evenings of the year. I hope you will be able to suggest a few cars. My initial finds are a Golf 1.4TSI and a Peugeot 1.6 THP GT.

I video'd the suitability of the new Golf VI TSI for Golf clubs at www.honestjohn.co.uk. Width is 1,786mm and 2,048mm including mirrors. Doesn't steer as well as a 207, though. And a 207 1.6THP150 with a 6-speed box would be a satisfyingly quick and economical car. I averaged over 40 over 6 months in the low geared 5-speed version.
Dear Honest John,
