Why are Suzukis with auto gearboxes so popular?

We are considering buying a Suzuki Vitara automatic. We are told by our local dealer that Suzuki are currently not manufacturing automatic cars, so they are selling like hot cakes and are very difficult to get hold of. Do you have any idea what the reasoning is if the automatic transmission car is so popular?

The Suzuki Vitara is currently only offered in the UK with the 1.4-litre mild-hybrid engine with manual gearbox. This is probably because of upcoming EU emission targets - automatics generally emit more CO2, so they're being dropped in order to reduce average CO2 emissions. There are quite a few dealers with pre-registered Vitara models with the automatic transmission in stock but you'll have to act quickly and might have to be prepared to travel for the right car.
