ABS selling

The ABS/ESP on my 56-plate Skoda Octavia 2.0 FSI failed at 32,000 miles, four months out of manufacturer's warranty and just eleven days after the expiry of the one-year used-car dealership warranty. I know your website and others have identified this failure as a common problem with post-2004 Octavias and some SEATs and VWs, but incredibly my Skoda dealer and even Skoda headquarters' customer services claimed not to know about it. I have been quoted about a thousand pounds to replace the unit and Skoda have now offered to pay half as a goodwill gesture, which perhaps suggests they have a sneaking suspicion this has happened before. In your opinion is this a fair offer or does Skoda have a moral, if not legal, obligation to replace the unit at its own expense?

This is fairly typical. VW has a special e-mail: volkswagencustomerservices@volkwagen.co.uk and promises to assist with the replacement cost to some extent, whatever the history of the car. (How much depends on the history.) It's strange that you should write that Skoda denies any knowledge when more than 100 readers have written to me of it. However, since the standard customer cost is £1,500, yet you were originally quoted £1,000, then reduced to £500, Skoda is tacitly admitting the problem. Owners who cannot get anywhere with the manufacturer are forced down the route of a much cheaper and permanent independent solution:
