Part-time four wheel drive

I want to buy a low cost 4x4 for occasional use and have seen a low mileage Freelander TD4 with BMW diesel engine at what seems like a fair price. I decided to do some research as to what for example a clutch would cost to replace, should it need one. It seems as though straightforward clutch replacement is not too bad (£350 quoted by Mr Clutch) but in the event of the DMF being the source of the problem then I could kiss goodbye to over £1,000. Is there a small 4x4 that doesn't have a DMF or maybe I should just get a basic Series Landrover and keep it simple. In short how can I avoid the dreaded dual mass flywheel?

I don’t know of any post year 2000 4WD 4 cylinder diesel that does not have a dual mass flywheel. You are right that, while very crude, an old Land Rover can represent a non-depreciating asset.
