Hot dogs

Now the hot weather season has descended on us, it has also brought with it idiots that leave dogs in their cars with insufficient ventilation. I witnessed this yesterday in the car park at Burnham Bridges at the foot of Box Hill, Surrey. Some fool had left two dogs in the back of a Range Rover with hardly any ventilation. The rear windows were down half an inch, the dogs in the back were in great distress. A crowd of angry people gathered round the car wanting to smash the windows. I told them not to do it and called the police. The police were there in five minutes. They were very pleased to be called as they said anyone that leaves dogs in this situation is breaking the law. Fortunately the couple that were responsible returned to the car. Apparently they had been for a picnic on Box Hill. The police gave them a dressing down and took their details. Please advise your readers if they come across such an incident, ring the police. Only if the situation is desperate should they resort to smashing the cars windows.

I hope Telegraph readers will not start vandalising cars for this reason. Some of the more short-sighted might smash a window only to find that the dog on the back shelf is of the nodding variety. But I share your abhorrence at the rank stupidity of some dog owners.
