Water margins

A while back you gave some advice on how to detect if the boot of a car was leaking. I can’t remember what it was. I seem to recall you said something about rubbing grease on the seal and closing it? Please could you repeat the advice. I have a very old CRX – immaculate, however, and the only problem I have is that the boot lid leaks, and everything gets damp and horrid. I put towels in and replace them very often. I have tried to sort it but cannot. I suspect it could be the seal, but who knows? Anyway any advice please would be much appreciated.

Dry both the boot seal and the facing shut thoroughly, preferably using meths. Smear a thin layer of lard all the way round the seal, then close, then re-open. The place where the lard has not transferred to the facing shut is where it isn't sealing and the water is getting in.
