In a state of lock

I own a 2004 Toyota Avensis, and have had trouble-free motoring since I bought it new. A couple of weeks ago the ignition failed completely, the key just turned in the barrel. This was a mechanical problem, not electrical, and necessitated ordering a new ignition lock, switch and barrel, at a total cost including labour, of £446.50. The RAC patrolman said that this was his first experience this problem in a Toyota, although not uncommon in other makes. It is obviously out of warranty, but having only covered just over 36,000 miles do think that I have a case for seeking compensation from Toyota?

Always worth asking. This kind of problem can be caused by suspending a whole ring of keys from the car key. Car keys should always be kept separate from house keys, etc. Not a regular problem with the model.
