Fob a job week

I have a 2001 Jaguar X-Type and recently it has become very reluctant to lock using the key fob. Fortunately, it opens the car with no problems. I assumed that after eight years it could do with a new battery. I called at a Jaguar agent to buy a new fob battery, but the parts manager refused to supply one. He maintained that the only solution was to order a new fob (£80) and to have the locking system reset by a Jaguar dealer. I have a second fob that is rarely used, and this works no better. I later called the service department of my local agent who advised that I would not need a new fob but he would need to have the car in for half a day to track down the problem. I bought new batteries, but the problem persists. What would be the difference between a new fob and the "nearly new" fob I keep as a spare? Was I being ‘fobbed off’ or is spending £160 for two fobs the only solution?

On Fords and Ford based cars you can change the fob battery yourself, but you have to do it within 10 seconds or the fob loses the code. So open the new battery pack first and have the new battery ready to insert, preferably wearing surgical gloves. Do not touch the flat faces of the new battery with bare fingers.
