Enraging gears

Are you picking up any adverse comment on the gearbox of the Toyota Yaris 1.33 TR? My son bought a new one in May 2009 and from the word go it seemed difficult to engage gears. He wanted to reject the car as ‘unfit for purpose’ there and then, but the Worcester Toyota Main Dealer suggested that the problem would go away after running-in. Far from it. 5 months later the problem is the same, if not worse. This is compounded by the fact that the dealer went bust in June 2009 and my son has had to seek assistance from the Toyota Main Dealer in nearby Bromsgrove. After a test-drive the Service Manager commented that the gearbox was ‘shocking’ and needed replacement. Another local dealer has informed us that he is trying to deal with a further three of the same model and problem. My son has contacted Toyota directly in writing, to be advised verbally that the difficult gearchange is a ‘characteristic’ of this gearbox, there is no fault and they will not consider helping to solve the problem. But Toyota has refused to put these comments in writing. In my experience of a Corolla and earlier Yaris, Toyota gearboxes have a silken change, none better. Any advice?

It might be due to special low friction oil used in the new 6-speed
box to get the car under 121g/km.
