Volkswagen Passat CC (2008 – 2012) Review
Volkswagen Passat CC (2008 – 2012) At A Glance
The Passat CC features the profile of a coupe yet benefiting from four doors and four individual seats with plentiful headroom and offering a Mercedes CLS look for less money. Many of the problem areas of the 2005-2010 Passat put right. Best to think of the CC as a different car.

Model History
February 2002
Available to order with a seven-speed DSG gearbox which enhances performance and economy. The compact and lightweight seven-speed DSG transmission, fitted with a pair of dry clutches, offers a number of benefits over a conventional automatic gearbox.
A lower first gear ratio improves acceleration from a standstill to 60 mph to 8.2 seconds (8.3 manual) while the seventh gear has been raised to act as an overdrive. This gives a fuel consumption figure on the combined cycle of 38.7 mpg (37.2 manual) and CO2 emissions are reduced to 172 g/km (178 manual).
Available only in standard CC trim, and with the 1.8-litre TSI 160 PS engine, the Passat CC with seven-speed DSG gearbox features an extensive list of standard equipment including 17-inch Phoenix alloy wheels, 2Zone Climatronic air conditioning, touchscreen stereo system with six-disc CD autochanger, driver's six-way electrically adjustable seat, multi-function leather steering wheel, six airbags and Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP).
January 2008
Passat CC unveiled
Featuring the profile of a coupe yet benefiting from four doors and four individual seats with plentiful headroom. Large, panoramic roof section measuring 750 mm in length and 1,120 mm in width, lending the interior a bright, airy feel. At the rear the bootlid blends into the rear window to allow a wide, practical opening. Intersecting the boot is a subtle aerodynamic wing framed by a pair of twin lens rear light units.
Options include Lane Assist is a safety system designed to guide the vehicle automatically should it sense that the car is inadvertently drifting out of the desired lane on a motorway. Park Assist allows the vehicle to guide itself into a parallel parking space with the help of sensors placed around the vehicle. Although the vehicle is responsible for steering inputs the driver retains control of the throttle and braking systems at all times.
A new steering wheel featuring controls for the phone and entertainment systems sits behind new dials in the cowelled instrument pack. New finishes including the option of wood or aluminium are complemented by a subtle new ambient lighting system. Beneath the optional touchscreen satellite navigation system are revised controls for the climate control. The front seats can be specified with integrated heating systems for the winter and cooling systems for the summer, technology previously only available on the Phaeton. In the rear a set of sculpted individual seats are joined by a storage cubby between the two passengers.
The new Passat CC features the option of Dynamic Drive Control or DDC. Offering three settings: comfort, normal and sport, the system acts not only on the damper units to firm up or soften the ride but also changes the characteristics of the electro-mechanical steering system to suit a more comfort- or sport-orientated driving style. Models without optional DDC adopt conventional damper units tuned to provide a sporty yet refined ride.
Choice of three petrol and two diesel engines. The entry level petrol engine is a 1.8-litre TSI unit developing 160 PS and 184 lbs ft of torque linked to a choice of six-speed manual or the advanced new seven-speed DSG gearbox. The 1.8-litre TSI engine allows the Passat CC to sprint to 62 mph in 8.6 seconds before achieving a top speed of 137 mph.
2.0-litre TSI, raises power to 200 PS while torque peaks at 206 lbs ft. Maximum of 147 mph, 0 to 62 mph 7.9 seconds. 2.0-litre TSI engine is available with a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. Topping the range is a new 3.6-litre V6 FSI engine developing 300 PS and 223 lbs ft of torque channelled via 4MOTION four-wheel drive and a six-speed DSG gearbox. A top speed of 155 mph and 0-62 of 5.5 seconds
Two new common rail diesel engines will also be offered in 140 PS and 170 PS guises linked to either six-speed manual or DSG gearboxes. The 140 PS model develops 236 lbs ft of torque and can achieve 62 mph in 9.8 seconds before reaching a top speed of 132 mph. The 170 PS diesel, which develops 258 lbs ft, cuts the 0 to 62 mph time to 8.6 seconds and raises the top speed to 140 mph.
April 2010
The Passat CC can now optionally accommodate five adults thanks to the addition of an extra space situated between the rear seats, while up front satellite navigation is fitted as standard along with a touchscreen Bluetooth device.
The GT model also benefits from the revisions plus it gains Nappa leather interior, front and rear parking sensors and cruise control. The GT trim level also retains 18-inch ‘Interlagos’ alloy wheels, ACC (Adaptive Chassis Control) electronically controlled pneumatic dampers and heat insulating tinted glass from the B-pillar backwards.
These changes on the entry-level model represent an extra £1,000 worth of equipment yet the revised Passat CC will cost only £515 more than the model it replaces. On the GT model the gap is even greater with an extra £3,000 worth of equipment being fitted yet the overall price of the car rises by £1,000.
The existing line-up of powerful yet efficient 1.8-litre TSI, 2.0-litre TSI and 3.6-litre V6 petrol engines and 2.0-litre TDI diesel engines remain, as does the choice of six-speed manual or DSG gearboxes on selected models. The new model opened for ordering 10-4-2010 with prices starting at £22,645 RRP on the road for the 1.8-litre TSI model.

November 2010
The cleanest and most fuel efficient version of the Passat CC yet produced has been unveiled in the form of BlueMotion Technology models. The Passat CC line-up sees BlueMotion Technology models join the range in place of existing diesel versions. The new additions to the Passat CC range have been modified to optimise efficiency and economy, with regenerative braking and Start/Stop systems fitted to the four-door coupé for the first time.
These revisions help the 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS Passat CC models achieve a combined 60.1mpg, up from 50.4, and CO2 emissions are cut to just 125g/km, down from 146g/km. The more powerful 2.0-litre diesel engine in the range producing 170 PS also boasts improved figures with economy up to 57.6mpg (51.4mpg DSG) and emissions down to 129g/km (144 DSG).

What to watch out for
Solid black paint does not seem to be very resistant to stone chips.
07-12-2012:TPMS tyre valve stems subject to mixed metal corrosion and can snap off.
11-01-2013:Warranty on 7-speed dry clutch DSG extended to 5 years or 150,000 kilometres in Russia and China. Followed by recalls in Australia, Singapore and Malaysia. Problem is with the Mechatronics unit, replaced in the Singapore/Malaysia recall. The transmission reportedly makes strange noises heard inside the car when shifting from 4th to 3rd, 3rd to 2nd and 2nd to 1st. Outside the car the noise is a metallic and repetitive sound, made when the car goes over speed-bumps. www.autoevolution.com reports that an angry group of French VW owners claim that Seat, Skoda and Audi drivers are also reporting the same problems.
23-02-2013:P ulsing vibration on braking at the rear caused by inner face of one rear disc acquiring two severely localised corrosion areas that effectively reduced the thickness of the disc at that point and caused a pulsating action on braking. This is due to prolonged static periods with the electric parking brakes on. It causes increased corrosion at the brake pad area which traps moisture and feeds the corrosion mechanism.
10-09-2013:55k mile 2010/10 reg Passat CC 1.8 DSG needed 2 clutch pack replacements to the DSG gearbox, following juddering on takeoff in 1st and 2nd gears. The first time was covered under warranty at 40k miles, but had to be done again at 50k miles, this time under extended warranty, that reader had to pay for, as over 3 years old. It also uses a litre of oil to every 1,400 miles. Reader told that this is 'within tolerance'. It is also about to go in as the drivers door has dropped, which is not covered under the extended warranty.
08-11-2013:On first generation Passat CC, the integrated RNS510 sat nav unit fitted as an option has become vulnerable to theft because, apparenty, the coding system used by VW on this model is easy to re-program and it can be fitted to older Volkswagen models.
11-06-2014:Clutch or DMF failure reported at 32k miles on 2011 Passat CC.
11-09-2014:2011 Volkswagen Passat CC 3.6 has V55 auxiliary coolant pump which should run when the engine is switched off hot to circulate coolant around the cylinder head. Pump not working on a readers 3.6 and suffering wet terminals. Worry that this may have allowed heat spots on the very wide cylinder head.
15-12-2014:Big disappointment from American owner of 2011 Passat 2.0T manual with the reliability of the car and with its American dealers: "Just to echo your information about the reliability issue of CC of those model years, I had a faulty engine indicator on instance for which I made four appointments with 2 dealers. I paid for the diagnosis the first time when they purged the engine but found nothing, hence it is my cost on the labor. They sent me to buy a new fuel tank lid which they believed was the cause. Firestone found a leaking seal on the engine cover during oil change. I took it back the dealer for replacement (under warranty) but they felt very embarrassed and challenged me about using a legit service shop. But the faulty engine light is still on after the seal replacement. I took it to another dealer that eventually found a faulty valve that turned out to be the cause and the faulty light was finally off. There have been just so many problems at the power train that their technicians are scared of going any further about diagnosing issues. I can just tell clearly now with this clutch issue. First time VW owner and liked the CC for all the good things other reviews suggested. But I am more than just a little disappointed for the build quality by a German car maker that has been in the industry for so long."
23-06-2015:Dual clutches of 2010 VW Passat CC DSG started to judder at 17k miles. Transmission oil had been changed in August 2014. Cost to replace clutch pack estimated at £1,070 after £600 contribution from VW.
26-11-2015:Volkswagen announced fix for EA189 1.6TDI and 2.0TDI engines. A “flow transformer” will be fitted directly in front of the air mass sensor on the EA189 1.6TDI engine. This is a mesh that calms the swirled airflow in front of the air mass sensor and will improve the measuring accuracy of the air mass sensor. (The air mass sensor determines the air mass throughput, which is a very important parameter for the engine management for an optimum combustion process.)In addition, a software update will be performed on the 1.6TDI. The workshop time is expected to be less than a hour. The EA189 2.0TDI engines will get a software update. The programming time for this will be around half an hour. The objective is still to achieve the applicable emission targets without any adverse effects on the engine output, fuel economy and performance. However, as all model variants first have to be measured, the achievement of these targets cannot yet be finally confirmed. Based on this, service concepts are currently being developed for all 28 EU markets concerned. The aim is to implement the update in the first vehicles during a recall starting in January 2016. However, to compete the entire recall is likely to take until the end of 2016. Volkswagen will contact all customers and endeavour to consider individual customer needs during the implementation of the recall to avoid any disadvantages for the customer such as possible loss of mobility. All customers will be offered free courtesy cars if required. Since the beginning of October 2015, all Volkswagen customers have been able to check for themselves whether their vehicle is affected by the diesel issue. At www.volkswagen.de/info every customer can enter their vehicle identification number to obtain clear information.
10-01-2016:Report of EGR failure on 58k mile 2010/60 VW Passat CC 2.0TDI 170 with EA189 engine. VW quoted £660 inc labour and VAT for replacement. Because this is a NOx emissions cheat engine that is particularly prone to EGR failure, VAG may be forced to either clean or replace these EGRs FoC as part of ist EA189 emissions recall.
28-03-2017:Complaint that prior to NOx emissions fix a VW Passat CC EA189 2.0TDI was fault-free. But adter the fix suffers an "overboost problem" at more than 70mph. Owner gets P0234 on his fault code reader that translates to "Engine Overboost Condition". Dealer denies that the softwarte fix caused the problem. (This may relate to the DPF actively regenerating more frequerntly.)
