Mitsubishi launches the Outlander in the UK

"Crossover" vehicle bridging the gap between a station wagon and an SUV to compete head-on with the Subaru Forester, Honda CR-V, Nissan X-Trail and Toyota RAV-4. All petrol and dual fuel Outlander models, are powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder MIVEC petrol engine that develops 158bhp at 5,750rpm and 158lb ft of torque at 4,000rpm.

The MIVEC engine (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve and lift timing Electronic Control system) switches between separate low and high cam profiles for improved torque at low and midrange speeds as well as higher output at high speeds. The result is bottom-end grunt, coupled with a top speed of 112 mph and 0-60 acceleration of 11.2 seconds. All have second-generation INVECS-II 4-speed autobox with sports mode manual override. On sale from 1-1-2004 priced at £16,999 for the equipment-laden 2.4 Equippe model, £17,999 for the twin-sunroofed Sport and £18,749 for the leather-clad Sport SE. Dual fuel variant of each model also be available from launch priced at £1,000 over the petrol model.
