2012 Golf Plus SE - Condensation in headlight unit - kinnoull

Of-side headlight unit OK. Condensation forms and doesn't go away in off-side unit It abscures about 50%+ (lower half) but dealership say it is not a warranty matter nor a safety issue. Apparently gas discharge lamps give off a gas which condenses on the glass and should disperse, as it does in the off-sdie unit. Anyone with information or comment.

Not sure I believe the dealer. Looks like a faulty headlight unit with poor sealing on the plastic.

>>gas discharge lamps give off a gas which condenses on the glass

Don't you just love the carp spouted by some of the motor trade.

It's a safety issue. Sue the *** if he doesn't change the unit.

The gas in gas discharge lamps is completely sealed inside the bulb. If the gas is Xenon, it could only condense at a temperature around minus 108 Centigrade.

The stuff condensing in your headlight is water from a leaky seal, so the dealer is not only lying but insulting your intelligence. He should replace the faulty unit.

Our Italian genius is quite correct. The dealer is spinning you a load of bull.

A batch of faulty headlamps and side lamps delivered and installed across the range of VAG discussed on "GRIP" German motoring program this week problem they steam up.

Another VW dealer who treats their customer with contempt.

The headlamp unit is leaking, thats all there is to it, you could remove the headlight bulb and seal and using a hair dryer warm the unit throughly, then as excess water condenses and collects in the corner feed a thin pipe in and suck it out then fully dry it.

I did exactly that two days ago with the family 2010 Aygo to be sure there wasn't a stonechip pinhole or other reason, there isn't, chucked it down with rain the same night and a small amout of water (1/4 teaspoon) reappeared, the owner will take it in to her local Toyota dealer who will fix the problem without a moments hesitation without consulting a politians spin guide.

This is NOT a VW dealer being awkward, they are following the VW instructions and if they replace the headlight THEY will have to pay for it out of their small margins as VW will throw it back at them so have a little patience and understanding! This is THE official VW word on the matter

Customer statement / workshop findings

Customer statement:

• Exterior light leaks/steamed up.

Technical background

Under unfavourable conditions, e.g. a car wash in winter, the inside of modern clear glass lamps steam up, sometimes persistently.

Customers complain about this because they fear leaks and effects on the function and service life of the lamps as well as MOT failure.

Measure

Visible steaming-up of the lamp glass is a concept-related characteristic of modern lighting systems, which affects all manufacturers and has no effects function or service life:

• It is no sign for water ingress as the result of a leak.

• Because of the materials used corrosion can be ruled out

• No loss of light or dazzling as the glass dries up after switching on the lamps.

Replacing the headlamps does not fix the problem.

A groundless parts replacement will be redebited.

Air humidity or leak?

The glass must be clear about 30 minutes after switching on the lamps.

If this isn't the case or drips run down the inside of the glass, check the lamps for leaks.

Make sure that the cap fits correctly.

Customer information

Air humidity tends to settle on cold surfaces. When switched on great heat is created in the lamps which is released via the vents (open system). If the lamps are switched off, they cool down and cold, humid air is sucked in via the ventilation. The air settles as condensation on the coldest point from the inside on the glass. On the lamps this is mainly the glass. This is a normal physical process. This has always been the case, but has been less or not at all noticeable on the old type of glass.

In stationary or when driving the condensation passes off.

But the condensation may recur.

Whereas the light passage area of the glass dries quickly when the light is on and especially when driving, this takes sometimes longer around the edge and the customers suspect a complaint. Technically this remaining steaming-up is insignificant.

But what are the reasons for this slow thawing?

On modern lamp systems with clear glass the light is not aligned by the lens any more but through a lens system and a reflector. The light beam hits the centre of the glass and it takes therefore longer this the edge of the glass warms up. As a result, the thawing is slower towards the edge of the glass.

>> the inside of modern clear glass lamps steam up

This isn't steam, it's condensation! Steam's invisible.

>>cold, humid air is sucked in via the ventilation

Warm air holds more water vapour than cold and is therefore more humid.

>>But what are the reasons for this slow thawing?

Thawing describes the change of state from solid to liquid. Where's the ice?

Don't you love the carp?

That is a translation from German to English of the OFFICIAL VAG Technical Product Information release, if the exact language is a little off I can provide you with the release in German so you can see if their scientific interpretation of the gaseous state of water is correct or not, to me you are just being pedantic. I think you should write to a certain Mrs Tina Turner and tell her she should change the name of her hit song to “condensed windows”, mind you it doesn’t quite have the same ring to it….
