Ford Fiesta - Fiesta 1.4 TDCi won't start - biggie

Hi there!

About 2 months ago the card didn't started up. I called my mechanic and he told me to push that little pump on the side of the air filter. The little tube did not have any diesel in it and when it picked up the gas it was a lot of air bubbles in it. ???

One day it starts and the other day won't. It was doing it for a month.

After a while it's got worst. I had to pump it for a minute or two to pick up the gas from the tank or something.

Than one day the display shoed AC Fail!

Before that my mechanic told me we need to change the diesel filter. OK. So we did.

The other mechanic changed the High Preasure pump and it still won't start. He told me to try a different diesel fuel - I live in Hungary - because we have some -25C at night here and the regular diesel is so bad here, it will get frozen or something.

So i did. The next day it started up hardly without pumping and the same day at night but 2 days later this morning it did it again! I still see NO gas in that little pipe and around that pump when I check it in the morning. Is that normal?

I think one of the O ring seals are gone and it sucks in some air to the gas pipe system.

Any advice or idea?

Thanks for the replies in advance.

Hi there,

I read this link on here a while ago;

Not sure if it's of any help, but might be linked?

Hi Dabooka!

Thanks for the LINK. I think I have to check that on monday in the garage.

The first thing I told my mechanic that there is air in the gas system. He told me to keep

pumping! For how long? Forever?

I need to fix this now. My wife uses the car for work every day. She can't deal with that every morning or during the day running from one place to the other.

I'll let you guys know what happens on monday.

Have a great evening!

My daughter has the exact same problem with her 2003 1.4 TDCI Fiesta , if she parks on a the flat or slightly nose up for a few hours or overnight , the car needs to be primed using the priming bulb- When parked nose down , no problems- I will check the supply pipe from the diesel filter housing.

Lots of posts on the InterWeb about this. It's a common fault on the Fiesta 1.4Tdci. On mine, the fault was a crack in a plastic fuel pipe near to the priming bulb and this in turn was caused by the pipe vibrating because the priming bulb was not firmly fastened to its bracket (it is now). As I've pointed out on other discussions about this, I was surprised that there was no obvious fuel leak. With the engine running, the fuel pressure seemed to hold the crack in the pipe closed, but when parked up, air would get in and the fuel would run back to the tank. A local garage sorted this out by using readily available standard size fuel pipe which is slightly wider than the specialised pipe fitted by Ford. He cut the cracked pipe at the crack and slid on the standard size pipe which he first dunked in a mug of hot water, then sliding the other side of the cut pipe into that. Well, the car's done two years and 20K miles since then and the repair is good! Another cause which I've read about is one make of fuel filter where the welded plastic join around the 'lid' of the filter (where the two nozzles are) starts to leak, and again, air getting in whilst parked causes the fuel to run back to the tank.

One other thing... There's a tap at the bottom of the fuel filter. It's to run off a bit of diesel if there's a chance of water in the fuel. (Water sinks below oil). Make certain that the tap is tight, because if you open it with the engine off, you'll just hear a gurgle as the fuel runs back.

Whatever happened to 'Hungarotex'? When I wuz a kid, so much stuff in the shops seemed to be made in Hungary. My first tent was a two-man bright orange Hungarotex!
