Passat Door - neil 1
The drivers door on my Passat does not close sometimes. It bounces back open and only after some random fiddling closes.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Try adjusting the door striker. It should line up with the centreline of the latch throat as the latch approaches it. Try to adjust it up or down only and not in & out as you would alter the door shut loads.

If this doesn't work it could be a fault inside the latch itself. Most likely explanation is the locking pawl inside the latch is sticking and not latching. I've seen this happen on latches from various manufacturers (though only in the development stages - doesn't mean it can't happen in production though). If this is the problem the only solution is a replacement latch - I wouldn't recommend you try stripping the latch apart, you may never get it back together. Try a specialist VW breaker for 2ndhand or German & Swedish for new.

Another alternative is that one of the release linkages from either interior or exterior handles is sticking (most likely at latch end as it will have to suffer water here). You will need to take off the door casing to examine these. When the door refuses to close try pulling on interior & exterior handles fully and release sharply - does this then allow the door to shut?

The front door handles of older model Passats (pre 96) always stick after a while. You do not need to remove the door panel to sort! Simply open door and undoo the large Philips screw head visible above door latch assy. This releases the door handle that can be pulled towards the front of the car and then pulled out a bit , lubricate all moving bits with oil and then grease , replace. This sorts out older Golfs as well!

My Passat is a 98 model.
When i got stuck the other day i finally shut the door by pulling the interior handle as far as it will go! It as worked ok for 2 days - probably waiting for an awkward location.
