my daughters metro is having problems. it normally drives ok, however occasionally when accelerating it sometimes cuts out and backfires thro the exhaust. sometimes when pulling hard it struggles to accelerate.
any ideas
thanks

Backfiring through the exhaust usually means ignition problems,so whether this Metro has contact breaker or electronic ignition would suggest full service to this area.Shouldn't be very expensive to do.

Could also indicate fuel starvation or very weak mixture. If a tune fails to sort it look at the carb - check for
1)sticking piston
2)dirt causing fuel blockage (eg at inlet to float chamber)
3)sticking float needle valve
4)punctured float
5)broken fuel pump
All these are easily fixed by someone who knows their way round an SU.

I'd go for an ignition fault - Dizzy Cap and Rotor arm are favourites!

thanks david, it was the distributer and roter arm, after a good clean up it seems to be ok. THANKS AGAIN. A.P.

Ah, good, thought so - being exposed like they are , they do get a little damp etc and play up.

Glad it was something simple in the end. Would suggest you consider replacing the cap & arm asap though - must be well past their best by now?

And don't forget the anti run on valve on the bulkhead, the crankcase breather pipes and brake servo vacuum hoses.
