No it is not, its driven by the auxiliary drive belt.

If you are thinking of changing it make a sketch of the drive belt route before you start as it is a bit tortuous.

If you are no mechanic as you say,I would be a bit careful as the cam timing belt has to be

disturbed. This is because the belt jockey pulliies are mounted off the water pump body.

That said it is no big deal, but be very careful not to upset the cam shafts timing as serious engine damage can result.

Also the power steering pipes have to be moved to one side to get the centre timing cover off.

As its your first time a couple of hours should see you clear.

Best of luck

I should add that so far I have not had to change the pump on my 98 Escort but I am on my 3rd timing belt.

That will tell you how long I have had the car. (12 years)

Thanks for your advice , much appreciated. The escort was losing water and i was told the radiator needed replacing so i got that done but it was still losing water a week later. I was then told the pump needed replacing as a new radiator can cause more pressure and the pump can go. The pump must of gone straight away as i never stopped losing water, makes me wonder if the radiator needed replacing, but i had to go by what the garage told me.

I find the radiator theory a bit hard to believe. I think that if the leak was capable of reducing the pressure it would have emptied the header tank.

Or did it ?

The expansion bottle was completely empty most of the time before and after the radiator was done ,had to keep filling it up. i suspect the pump needed replacing in the first place, and the garage didnt investigate all possibilities. The radiator may have had a small leak but wasnt the main problem. Dont want to spend more money than i have to really as a new pump is only £35 so need to get labour down to a minimum. Garage said its a 4 hour job.

Having explained about the header tank, its all coming together, but I think 4 hrs is pushing it a bit. Havent you got a mobile mechanic in your area ?

One more thing, make sure you have the correct number of holes in the pulley flange of the new pump. Some have 4 others 3 ,I think yours should have 4

ok will do thanks again for your help.
