The naked sump - oilrag
I knew it was out there - on Mrs Oilrag`s new Panda. I could sense it - in it`s allegedly thin coat of black paint - a virgin in it`s own right. Never a blast of salt or night-time condensation. Never a lash of grit - slash of rain or salt salt SALT. Encrusted, scabbed - corroding to paper thin metal and the dribbling incontinence of oil leaking middle age.

Oh! sump of tin
what a sin
you`re gonna lust
for grease, not rust

Your curvy shape is hard to reach
your virgin paint a lesson to teach
here comes a hand to rub and slather
a pot of grease - no more blather

I know your shape, your curves and plug
out of which your oil will glug
Be ready at one thousand miles
to dump your swarf and rest a while

Mobil 1, will be your nector
unlike others in your sector
some may laugh at this or nag
but you`re the mistress of oilrag.

Ouch! ;>)

It is enough to make one sing,
While they carelessly do stray,
Along the beautiful banks of the silvery Tay,
Beautiful silvery Tay, rolling smoothly on your way,
Near by Newport, as clear as the day,
Thy scenery around is charming I'll be bound...
And would make the heart of any one feel light and gay on a fine summer day,
To view the beautiful scenery along the banks of the silvery Tay.

Are you by any chance related? I think we should be told.
The naked sump - JH
Yes. It's a shame to spoil two houses. :-)

Doesn't the original oil need to be left in for a year to allow proper running in?

The naked sump - Happy Blue!
Just what I was thinking?
The naked sump - Avant
There was an Old Person called Oily,
Whose oil-rag was ancient and soily.
It fell in the sump;
The car got the hump;
And now soily Oily's blood's boily.

(After Edward Lear....long after)
The naked sump - oilrag
"Doesn't the original oil need to be left in for a year to allow proper running in?"

Maybe. But i`ve never done it that way. On the Multijet diesel, I changed to Mobil 1 at 300 miles and ran it in as per HJ`s advice.
It`s very free and sweet running, using no oil at 30,000 miles.

There surely has to be some microscopic swarf and no harm in getting it out after a few hundred miles - with the turbo bearings in particular in mind.

I see the Panda 1.1 engine as being less (potentially) affected, with no turbo or chain - but oil & filter cheap enough and my time is free.

Letting an new engine run to it`s first scheduled oil change - on it`s bedding in oil, seems a trick of the accountants to me, along with extended service intervals. It would surely be marketing suicide for a marque to still specify an early oil change.

Better to pretend it doesn`t need it - so that Auntie Nellie can feel smug in the showroom about how little servicing it needs.

OK Oily, but I have a fear this Panda will be killed by kindness, so at least promise me it will see some redline rev action. :)

The naked sump - oilrag
"Redline"
Steady on now! .......4,000 revs perhaps ;-)
The naked sump - SteveLee
Yep give it a good revving in 3rd gear to about 5,500rpm then allow engine braking to slow the car afterwards to about 2K rpm and repeat twice more, that'll bed the rings in perfectly. Oil change time after that, then don't worry about "running in" it's not necessary, if anything rev it a bit harder than normal for the first 1,000 miles but on light throttle openings coz you probably don't want to burn fuel for the sake of it.
The naked sump - oilrag
It`s probably done all that in reverse gear this Morning Steve ;-)
The naked sump - Lygonos
A little microscopic surface erosion is good for bearing surfaces.

This was noted when artificial hips were being developed - time and money invested on getting the most immaculately smooth metal surfaces was wasted as it actually increased wear rate.

From new I wouldn't 'drive it like ya stole it' as per the bumper stickers of the Krooze Scene, but I'd certainly not molly-coddle a new engine. HJ's recommendations is ok, but probably unnecessarily prolonged, but then so is the advice not to use fully synthetic until 10k miles or more.

(At least it's not as anal as the 3-4k mile oil changes with used oil analysis you see on many US sites.)

The Forester got Castrol Edge 5W30 at it's 1000mile change, 10000miles and will be getting Mobil 0W40 at 20000miles - sweet as a nut, huge grunt, no flat spots, and returns 26mpg (combined test 27).

It's oil, not magic.

Only if gb took it off the transporter. :)

That'll be a new clutch then oilrag...
The naked sump - bazza
What oil spec are you proposing Oily? I'm asking as our Pandas are the pre-Eco spec and as far as I can see, all Fiat have done is put in low viscosity oil and fit low rolling resistance tyres. I might try a lower viscosity oil myself.
By the way, these engines are little jewels and thrive on a good thrashing Italian style! It will then feel like a miniature rally car!
The naked sump - oilrag
That`s a good point Bazza - guess what? The handbook specifies 5w40 oil. I wonder if they put something of lower viscosity in to get it through the test - then specify a higher viscosity in service. Surely not?

But the handbook mentions the Eco - so....?

I expected it to be 0w30 - or lower, with all the fuss about `low viscosity`
The naked sump - bazza
My pre- Eco handbook specifies SAE 10w-40 for petrol engines. I think I will try 5w-40 good quality synthetic.

I say Lud and IIH, steady on chaps i'll have you know i take the greatest care of peoples hard earned motoring investments.

Anyway the clutch wouldn't be ruined reversing off its downhill..;)

I very much doubt it. It's much more likely to be steel.

Oh! sump of steel
NOW you feel!
rusts embrace
on your carapace

The planet twists and turns through space
As Uncle Henry longs for grace
His sumps have rusted in his dreams
perhaps he over-counted beans

It`s red on top and red below
Main Dealer watched it grow and grow
It`s desperate, thinned and holding oil
Now it`s let go - the road so soiled

Peter Parker motors past
Is that the devil tapping his Last?
A donkeys hoof `praps on the roof?
or big ends knocking - seeking proof.

There was a time of hope and peace
Now lost forever - want of grease
In requiem now - all is lost
As Peter knows now - to his cost

While a hand is free and grease is cheap
there is a risk of `mission creep`
Brake pipes also long to feel
caring hands before them kneel

Main Dealer`s seen it all before
rust and rot - galore
His mechanics see it at every visit
Watch, not touch though, is implicit
