peugeot 405 idle - john q
Hi,

The car in question is a 1993 405 2.0 STi Auto.

The problem is the idle. On startup the car seems to want to idle well below the 850rpm mark. I can't start the car and run it without keeping my foot on the accelerator to keep the revs up. I've fudged a workaround by changing the position of the clip on the accelerator cable where it joins the injector unit. Though this means that the car sometimes idles about the 1200-1400rpm mark, once it has warmed up.

I believe the problem is likely to be caused by the stepper motor. Is this right, and if so how can I check it?

Any help appreciated.

John

PS

There doesn't seem to be many of ths type of car about, finding another stepper motor to try out is likely to be an expensive test.

The first thing to do is thoroughly clean the throttle body and idle stepper motor. In 90% of cases this will do the trick. You didnt say whether the engine would idle ok when warm. If it did it would indicate that the motor is working but too sludged up to help when cold.

The car does idle better when it has benn thoroughly warmed up, however it is still prone to cutting out. It would probably idle all day, but, when the accelerator is blipped the revs drop right down after you take your foot off, usually resulting in the engine cutting out.>> The first thing to do is thoroughly clean the throttle body

I had until last year 1994 2.0GTX (80k miles) that had exactly the same problem. I did all the usual things (change filters, HT leads, plugs etc.) I took it to Peugeot who told me there was nothing wrong according to their computer, but suggested I replace the idle control valve / stepper motor. This I did for around £80. This made absolutely no difference - although the old one looked quite dirty. A fuel injection 'specialist' then suggested the problem was the engine management which had been upgraded 7 times by Peugeot since I bought the car. I upgraded this (£300) which made a small difference. I then replaced the vacuum hose to the MAP sensor because I was told this could be the problem. Again no difference. Finally I brought the Haynes Fuel Injection Manual. This said that with the Magnetti Marreli injection on these cars, if you turn the ignition on, wait for 30 seconds and then start the car, the idle speed is reset to the current throttle position. This did make a difference for a few weeks until it started playing up again. I then did the same again and it was OK for another few weeks. I came to the conclusion that the problem was probably the throttle position sensor, but I got rid of the car before doing anything more about it.
