02 1.6 Sqeaking Fan belt...I think! - willow
First thing in the morning when I start out for work, there seems to be a twittering, squeaking bird trapped under my bonnet on the left hand side. Curiously, as the engine gets warm after about six miles or so, the noise stops, should I worry?

Any ideas please?

Is it worse on a wet / damp morning than a dry morning?

I had this problem on a 53 reg Focus TDDi. It would sqeak for a minute or few hundred yards after cold start up. I replaced the belt (£8 from Unipart) and it cured the problem.

Howver, mine also squeeks upon letting the clutch out when pulling away quickly. Renewal of the belt did not solve this problem and it would be interesting if yours does the same. I have been told that it is more likely to be the clutch which is otherwise perfect.

Probably an engine mounting.

If you can hear it squeaking on tickover, with the bonnet open, squirt a bit of water over the belt/pulley. If it stops squeaking for a few seconds you have pretty conclusive proof of the cause.
