One of the reasons they seem to fail is due to people not replacing the spark plugs often or not. My Corsa is still on the original pack and almost 82k and not a miss fire in site. Its had three sets of plugs in the cars life.

It seems to be certain cars. Escorts seem to suffer from this (Zetec) but I don't know of a single case of a Fiesta Endura failing on this. My mums friend had a Magane and the coil pack failed at 10k then again at 18k.

I was in the motor trade up to 1992, but these days I leave cars alone + I don't have any diagnostic gear anymore.
My wife's Clio started to misfife & run on 3 cylinders one xmas - and it was an auto which made it tricky to drive!
Main dealer charged me £50 to diagnose the fault and another £50 for the coil pack ...
R.I.P. OFF! I outed the car soon after & read up on coil packs!!

My mum had this on her StreetKa, which was very expensive as it wrecked the cat as well. With the diagnostics, parts and labour, it was a grand's worth.

Interestingly, the (well trusted and very competent) indie who saw the car originally fitted a pattern part which never quite worked properly. In the end they ended up using a genuine part from a dealer which cured the problem.

This is one case where I can unequivocally state that using a main dealer from day 1 would have saved money and done a top job.

Going back 15 years, the only breakdown I ever had in my old 1.6 Pinto Sierra was when the coil failed. This was the traditional bottle shaped item feeding a conventional dizzy. Of course, when these coils failed, it wasn't a misfire - the engine stopped dead!

VAG (they used europes entire stock at one time, there were none to be bought anywhere)
Renault - they used the same maker and had the same issues.

Coil pack failed on our 2001 Focus 1.6 Zetec at 100,000 miles - the first significant fault on this car which we've owned from new. Dealer elected to replace the coil pack, all 4 plugs and HT leads which might not have been stricltly necessary, but if it's good for another 100,000, that's OK with me!

early Jaguar S Types had the same, changing the packs cured it
