Interested to see what mileages have been achieved on the same engine/gearbox for different motors.

My previous 1994 L-reg cavalier 2.0 8V LSi was sold with 158,000 on the clock, original clutch although did have head gasket renewed. The present Omega Auto has reached 92,000 (2.0 16V) without any problems so far (touch wood!).

Type 2 VW Caravette 1600cc single port

engine 211,000. Rebuilt mainly due to a leaking crankshaft oil seal and you know the story, while its out, might as well etc.

Gearbox still orginal and untouched when van sold another 50k later, about 260+ ish IIRC.

Saw it for sale in a car lot on Attercliffe in Sheffield about three years later. They'd resprayed the front panel with a sort of suede brown effect, you know I nearly cried. I'll dig out the photo for Lee's community site when I get the chance.

1956 VW Beetle 220,000 with normal servicing only, but 2 clutches. 1983 Cavalier 1.6, 258,000 with camshaft replaced at 112,000 everything else original including the clutch. Sold on when I realised that belting a 13 year old car down the autobahn was not a good idea. Was trying to beat this with a 92 Cavalier 2.0 and had got up to 113,000 when it was written off after an accident. The Cavaliers were both fitted with Kenlowe Hot Start and subject to HJ's philosophy of short oil change intervals. I'm running a Vectra now with the Hot Start and Shell Helix synthetic oil. 100,000 on the clock and the engine looks like new inside the camshaft housing. I've been driving for 34 years but I've only owned 6 cars so it isn't difficult to clock up high miles on each one.

Currently selling my father-in-law's 1996 Escort 1.8 diesel with 176,000 on clock.

Original almost everything but four sets of rear wheel bearings over its life.

I sold a J reg Cavalier two years ago with, IIRC, 174,000 on it, still see it round the town, looks in fine fettle.

Go here and all will be revealed. We could start another thread on how long they take to warm various cars up!

Out of interest how often has the cambelt been replaced on that Escort engine ?
It must have been done on time, every time to get to that mileage without going bang.
Matthew Kelly
No, not that one.

Every 40K on the nail. I don't know if he ever had the tensioners done, though. Be a great car for whoever buys it.

I have a 1987 Saab 9000i - no turbo. Now covered just over 198,000. Had new clutch at 83000, new water pump c.97000, head gasket at 145000. Just regular servicing, run on lead free all its life, only 12000 oil changes despite frequent resolutions to change every 6000! Has run on various oils, Magnatec for last three years. Always use Saab oil filter. Noisy timing gear but, what the hell, it runs fine! Still does 40 miles/day, and I believe that this is part of the secret. I don't treat her gently either! Will start on the button even after three weeks unused.

262,000 miles, Volvo 240, 1993. No attention apart from regular servicing. Did need a new alternator at 235,000 miles.

Still going well.

A new alternator? I would have taken that back to Volvo if i were you, disgraceful.

;)

That's going some in 9 years! Is it an auto - presumably not on originl clutch if manual?
How high have you gone? - Toad, of Toad Hall.
Toad is unimpressed by this whole debate.

I know from personal experience that reps will put 150k on a car in 2 years.

These cars end up of the forecourt of independant traders with 62k on them and presuambly give no trouble for years.

Where are the "high mileage cars" and "high mileage bores" threads?
I can't find them

Just thought, try searching for bores, rather than mileage. Here's one of them!
