98 1.8d very poor starter......tried everything!!! - desperado
Can anyone please help?! I have a 1998 Ford Escort 1.8 non turbo diesel van which in the ten months I have owned it has never wanted to start in the morning or after a period of standing. This problem is especially bad in cold weather (requiring a jump start to get it going) but after a lot of smoke and chugging, once started it will start and run fine all day if not left for too long. I have read other similar posts and replies on here and have tried everything (I think), new glow plugs, glow plug relay and all cabling checked and ok, new battery, new starter motor, new fuel filter housing and it is still the same!! Has anyone please got any other suggestions (apart from setting fire to it!). Any help greatly appreciated.

sounds like you've got an air leak somewhere in the fuel lines, on diesels the splits suck air in instead of leaking diesel out so can be hard to find.

im not familiar with the escort setup but it's usually one of the following,

rubber fuel line into fuel filter
rubber fuel line from fuel filter to pump
seal on fuel filter
rubber leak of pipes between injectors
hand primer if the car has one

all the rubber fuel line listed above can be replaced for about £10 at the most, it's just a case of checking the inner diameter of your fuel pipes then getting some more from a motor factor and cutting them to length.

thanks for the reply chris, will try what you've suggested over the weekend.

How many miles has it done? It could just be cream crackered, have you had a compression test?

not had a compression test done but only done 120k.

A possible way of finding the leak is to park facing downwards on a steep hill so the fuel tank is higher than the engine and then look for leaks. Does it have a fuel primer? if so, try pumping it until it goes hard and the try starting it.

See the "antipodean remedies" thread in Discussion. Might not cure the cause but may treat the symptoms !

Have you actually seen the glow plugs glowing when required?

Interesting that it will fire up with a jump start, these always did turn over very slowly, maybe your battery is getting a bit tired anyway (i'll probably reread your post and find you have a new one..doh).

A mate had an Orion with the same engine, the stop solenoid went on the blink, we took the solenoid out and removed the plunger and put solenoid minus pluger back in, that cured it, but he had to stall stop for a few days till he could get replacement, maybe a long shot but if all else fails.

Have you changed fuel filter recently, and if so did you run some injector cleaner through, various makes available.
Only musings.

Glow Plugs or air in the fuel system. At that age I suspect the priming button on the side of the block. Try priming it tomorrow morning then statrt it. If it starts then there is the problem. Very common. Regards Peter

I'd put my money on more of a fuel running back issue than anything else given what you have told us.
