1996 1.9 TDi-Cannot get 2nd and 4th gears - Tony Soprano

VW Golf TDi 1996-All of a sudden today,I cannot engage second and fourth gear,it just wont go in.All the other gears seem fine,and clutch works fine too.Any ideas what the problem is?Is it a gear linkage issue? If so,is this an expensive job to fix?
